"The first virtue in a soldier is endurance of fatigue, courage is only the second virtue."
-Napoleon Bonaparte-
One of the key of Napoleon success was his skill to inspire and motivate his troops. He was doing this by staying close to his soldiers and try to help them, although in general he was an autocratic leader but he could be very friendly to his soldiers at the same time. In addition to that Napoleon had another great method to motivate his troops. In his army if a soldier fight well and strong with passion of defending and sacking and also listen to the orders that soldier would be promoted to the higher levels. This promoting method make the all the troops to do their best in the wars. As he said “Men are moved by two levers only: fear and self-interest” he believed that men move with two factors which are fear and self-interest , due to the fact that Napoleon believe this so he mostly tried to developed these levers in his soldiers so they would have more passion to move forward and victory.
The method of motivation can be well explained with the theory of intrinsic and extrinsic, intrinsic is an inner passion that leads a person to reach his/her goal in this case the passion of winning a battle against enemy and defending from their own country make an inner passion and motivation in the soldier which can motivate him towards his goal and victory. Also the extrinsic motivation is a when an outsider give a person a passion to do the work which Napoleon used by promoting the soldiers who fight well and listen to order carefully this motivation give each soldier an external passion from outside which can also lead the soldier to move forward and achieve his goal.
